Walking the rim of Tuff Crater

We hied off to nearby Northcote (7 kilometres away) to take on a trail we last visited more than 10 years ago – the Tuft Crater Path. We parked our car on the bottom of Exmouth Road, then turned left and walked nearly 3000 steps to reach the other entrance on St Peters Street and back. It is an easy walk, a quite flat route of natural gravel interspersed with boardwalks, past mangroves, and the sound of the motorway on the other end.

According to the Auckland Council, this walking path goes around the rim of Tuff Crater, which erupted about 200,000 years ago. Yes, we sometimes forget Auckland has around 50 volcanoes. This spot marks the first of our regular walks around #Aotearoa as we start the next phase of our lives – #ActiveRetirement.
